How Do You Attach Custom Patches for Clothes?

Heat-Activated Backing
Heat press and iron-on are two ways to apply compatible heat-activated backing. Choose the equipment and settings to suit the patch and garment fabric.
Heat Press
Apply compatible heat-activated patches with a garment heat press. Check the fabric and coating, confirm the press settings, and test attachment and washing on the actual garment.
Household Iron-on
Apply heat-activated patches to suitable fabrics with a household iron. Follow the approved application instructions and test the bond and wash performance before using this method for your clothing range.
Sew-on
Stitch the patch onto shirts, denim or outerwear. Check that the sewing machine can reach the chosen area without closing a pocket or catching the lining. On coated fabrics, consider the effect of needle holes.
Hook-and-loop
Use hook-and-loop backing when patches need to be removed or swapped. Specify whether you need the hook side only or both sides, and arrange for the matching loop panel to be sewn onto the garment.

Which Edge Works Best?
Choose an edge finish that suits the patch material, shape and garment. The stitched borders below are intended for textile patches; PVC and leather need different edge treatments.

Merrowed Border
A rounded thread border for circles, ovals and simple badge shapes. It gives the patch a raised outline, but is less suitable for deep notches or intricate contours.

Embroidered / Satin Edge
A stitched border that follows the outline of a textile patch. Leave enough space between the border and lettering. Narrow sections and sharp corners need review before production.

Laser-cut / Hot-cut Edge
A flatter edge for detailed shapes on suitable materials. Laser cutting and hot cutting produce different finishes, so confirm the cutting method and whether the material seals cleanly.

Supply a Pantone reference or an agreed physical colour reference, and identify whether the goal is a tonal match to the garment or a contrasting brand mark. A screen image alone is not a reliable material-colour standard.

Review the proposed face, background and border against each garment colour. Thread sheen, pile, printing and leather surfaces can appear different even when aimed at the same reference; agree any visible compromise before production.
Separate a repeat from a revision
